Kathy Sudeikis, vice president of corporate relations for All About Travel, is a long-time friend of Gilda’s Club KC and a three-year breast cancer survivor. Kathy is intimately familiar with how social and emotional support is a critical complement to the medical treatment for cancer patients. That much needed psycho-social piece “gives you a place of hope and peace when you are scared to death, when you’re not seeing your doctor on a regular basis,” says Kathy. Gilda's Club Kansas City, as an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community (CSC), is proud to participate as a 2010 community partner of Lee National Denim Day!
Denim Day is a fundraising event taking place on October 8, 2010. Now in its 15th year, it’s a day when thousands of companies and organizations across the country offer their staff or members a chance to wear blue jeans in exchange for a $5 donation to the fight against breast cancer. In addition to CSC, donations also benefit the Women's Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
CSC and its local affiliates, including Gilda's Club Kansas City, have the opportunity to receive significant funding for our national outreach and in local communities across the country as a result of contributions made during this year’s Denim Day. If your company, neighborhood, school or any other group or organization is interested in participating in this event, please visit http://www.denimday.com/participate.aspx to register your group online. It’s a fun, easy way to raise money for Gilda's Club Kansas City and contribute to breast cancer research and support nationwide!
Additional history and information:
Gilda's Club Kansas City, as an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community, is one of the local partners in this year's Lee National Denim Day on October 8, 2010.
For the past fourteen years, the first Friday in October is designated Lee National Denim Day - a day when supporters nationwide come together to put on their jeans in exchange for a $5 contribution to the fight against breast cancer with the goal of raising millions of dollars in a single day. Initially, the campaign was geared toward those in the workplace, but today anyone can start a team of friends and family and put on their jeans together as an act of solidarity in the fight against breast cancer.
Since 1996, Lee National Denim Day has raised nearly $80 million for the fight against breast cancer. The underlying concept behind the program has been simple – by convincing enough people to take one small collective step, together they could reach an incredible goal. Last year alone, this campaign raised $4.2 million nationally.
Although Lee National Denim Day was founded with the primary goal of supporting breast cancer research, Lee also recognizes that there are millions of people facing cancer who need greater support and educational resources in their communities. That is why, this year, a portion of funds raised through the campaign will benefit Cancer Support Community affiliates, like Gilda’s Club Kansas City, to help us right here in Kansas City to provide emotional support and educational programs to those faced with cancer and their loved ones.
If you decide to participate in Lee National Denim Day, the money you and your colleagues raise on October 8, 2010, will not only support much-needed breast cancer research. A portion will also be used to help Gilda’s Club Kansas City provide social and emotional support to ALL people (men, women, and children) with ANY kind of cancer, along with their families and friends. There are 60,000 people in the metro area who are living with cancer today. When you factor in families and close friends who are directly impacted by someone else’s cancer diagnosis, the number of people who are currently directly impacted by cancer in Greater Kansas City easily balloons to over a quarter of a million. So, the need is tremendous.
Please help support our efforts here in Kansas City to open a Gilda’s Club by taking the lead in launching a Lee National Denim Day at your company, social club, support group, school, or association. Registration is easy and takes just a few minutes! Just visit the Lee National Denim Day website to sign up.

The Jeff Wilcox Foundation selected Gilda's Club Kansas City as the charity recipient of its fundraising efforts in 2010. The Jeff Wilcox Foundation was started in 2006 by those who knew Jeff Wilcox, who passed away in September 2005 at the age of 35 from Giloblastoma Multiform. Current initiatives are to promote academic excellence through scholarships and to further cancer research through direct funding of critical research projects. The foundation holds a Poker & Trivia Tournament each year as a fundraiser in different parts of Missouri. This year the fundraiser was held in the Kansas City area, at Vesper Hall in Blue Springs, on Saturday, March 6, 2010. For more information about the foundation, click here.

Ira Kusnetzky presented the art piece he has designed for Gilda's Club KC and many of those attending helped to support Ira's wonderful work and Gilda's Club by becoming "Co-owners" of the art.
